Radiation & Neurodegeneration

Robert Hinshaw, BS

Additional Authors: Cynthia A. Lemere

The radiation environment beyond Earth’s magnetic field poses a largely unmitigated threat to human health in space. As part of NASA’s efforts to reduce the risk of this space radiation, we are investigating how the brain responds to these exposures in the context of sex and neurodegenerative disease. With mice and human cell models of Alzheimer’s disease, we have found that both sex and disease-relevant genotypes alter the neural response to radiation exposure.
