Patient Satisfaction and Outcomes Following Outpatient Joint Arthroplasty in Academic Medical Centers

Scientific Abstract

There is limited literature evaluating patient satisfaction and outcomes in patients undergoing outpatient joint arthroplasty procedures in academic medical centers (AMCs). The present study seeks to determine the following: patients’ desires to repeat their procedures and be discharged on the same day, patient reported outcomes, and readmission rates in patients undergoing outpatient joint arthroplasty in AMCs. A prospective survey study was completed by 281 THA/TKA/UKA outpatients from May 2018 to December 2020. 100% of THA, 93.8% of TKA, and 93.0% of UKA patients surveyed stated that they would elect to undergo their respective procedure again. Furthermore, 94% of THA, 81% of TKA, and 95% of UKA patients stated they would like to be discharged on an outpatient basis again. THA patients reported a mean interval HOOS JR score of 94.7 (SD 9.5), TKA patients reported a mean interval KOOS JR score of 89.9 (SD 11.4), and UKA patients reported a mean interval KOOS JR score of 86.1 (SD 15.9). Finally, the readmission rate were 3.0%, 2.9%, and 5.6% for THA, TKA, and UKA respectively. In conclusion, patients who underwent outpatient arthroplasty procedures at two AMCs experienced minimal readmissions and reported a high desire to repeat their outpatient procedures.

Lay Abstract

There is little research evaluating patient satisfaction and outcomes in patients undergoing outpatient joint arthroplasty procedures in academic medical centers (AMCs). Using surveys, the present study examined patients’ desires to repeat their procedures and be discharged on the same day, patient reported outcomes, and readmission rates in patients undergoing outpatient joint arthroplasty in AMCs. A prospective survey study was completed by 281 patients undergoing total hip (THA), total knee (TKA), or unicompartmental knee arthroplasties (UKA). 100% of THA, 93.8% of TKA, and 93.0% of UKA patients surveyed stated that they would elect to undergo their respective procedure again. Furthermore, 94% of THA, 81% of TKA, and 95% of UKA patients stated they would like to be discharged on an outpatient basis againFinally, the readmission rate were 3.0%, 2.9%, and 5.6% for THA, TKA, and UKA respectively. In conclusion, patients who underwent outpatient arthroplasty procedures at two AMCs experienced minimal readmissions and reported a high desire to repeat their outpatient procedures.

Clinical Implications

Academic medical centers can provide effective and safe total hip, total knee, and unicompartmental knee arthroplasty procedures in an outpatient basis with similar reported outcomes to surgeries being performed in ambulatory surgical centers.
